some nights ...

... i wish there was someone around here to sit on a roof-top with and talk until the sky got bright again. you see it in the movies, but so rarely in real life.

when i was a teenager i had a small mattress i'd haul up on to the garage roof. back down and then i'd climb up the ladder one more time with my telescope in tow. i'd watch the stars through its aperature until i grew sleepy. laying out on the mattress, i'd eventually fall asleep.

other nights i'd just sit on the peak of the roof, legs dangling over the edge, and watch people returning home and animals coming out for their nocturnal roamings. i'd sit up there and think about the things that puzzled me, that worried me, that made me happy.

i could see most of the roofs on the other houses in the valley: not a single person on any of them. i used to imagine what it would be like if people came out at night and sat on their roofs and looked heavenward together. i imagined what it would be like to share the roofspace with others; i tried a few times but discovered that it wasn't as enjoyable for others as it was for me.

while people would clamber up to the roof tops to watch fireworks shows or parades ... it didn't seem to be a common place for meditation and sharing moments of thoughtfulness with others.

i can't say that sitting on roof tops has gotten any more popular in the years since then.

so when i read about the earliest known human vilages and how they had no lanes or paths between the houses, such that to get anywhere the inhabitants had to walk on the roofs ... it please me greatly.

Don't feel TOO lonely. Here at least, I'm sure more people would enjoy sitting on their roofs if only the building design allowed easier access (and less treacherous seating!)

You know Wade is going to make a picture out of this, yeah? ;) But yes, i am surprisingly much with you on this, rooftop lounging is sort of... well, nice and relaxing :) There's something sort of tree-platform about it to me...

I've done it before, but not in a while since the roof in my current house isn't exactly the best place to sit. I'd really like to see past the house in front of me when I go up there in my current house, but this area is heavily forested and there's a bunch of huge tress. It's very relaxing though, specially if it's a bit after it rains, because everything smells green.

You need to move to the middle east where the rooftops are an important part of their daily lives..they sit there in the evenings to enjoy the coolness of the day. I imagine there is a whole little culture that appears in the evenings...

Amazingly sitting on the roof and enjoying yourself is something you have to learn.
Or, more specifically, sitting still and letting your mind wander is not something that comes natural. Well, to kids it does, but as you get older and get more responsibilities just taking time for yourself makes many people feel guilty.

If I spent a whole lot of time just enjoying the night sky (its up a mountain here, not a roof ;) my mind eventually wanders to creativism and sooner or later I want to grab some meterial and just start writing or drawing or something...

Heh, I wanted to climb my rooftop once, but it's an ugly soviet 14-story building and the door to the roof was unfortunately closed :)

I used to climb on the roof of the nearby hotel as a kid (it has a structure made of cube-like sections, so it wasn't that hard). As you can imagine, my parents were quite angry when they found out, what I was doing at nights. But I still kept sneaking on the roof afterwards, the "timeless" experience of standing on the roof of the hotel was too much to resist ;)

when I lived in england, my dad would take me up on the roof. I haven't been on any rooftops in canada, but around the end of highschool I spent a lot of time lying on my front lawn with friends, chatting and watching the stars. we generally realised it was time to go home when the sky started turning green at 4:30am :)

Get a spot on your roof that's well suited for multiple people, like a balcony of sorts. Then start a roof-sitting meetup group or something :)
